Mind You is a new entrant into the meditation and mindfulness app category, competing against established players like Headspace and Calm. As the company's first design hire, I was brought in to build the user research foundation from the ground up — there was no existing user or competitor data to draw from.

THE CHALLENGE
With no past research to lean on, the team needed a clear picture of who their users actually were: their meditation habits, what motivated them, and what was standing in the way of a consistent practice.
THE APPROACH
I designed and distributed a survey to a demographically diverse group across the country, covering age, gender, occupation, and location. The survey explored current meditation frequency, satisfaction with that frequency, and the lifestyle factors — work, schedule, family, and simply not knowing where to start — getting in the way. From those findings, I built two user personas and empathy maps: Jayla, a busy 25-year-old teacher who values mindfulness but can't fit it into her schedule, and Leon, a 60-year-old business manager approaching retirement who wants structure but doesn't know where to begin.
THE OUTCOME
The research surfaced two distinct user types with different needs: time-starved beginners who need low-friction entry points, and routine-driven users who need clear structure and guidance to start. These insights gave the Mind You team a foundation for prioritizing onboarding and scheduling features, with recommended next steps of focus groups and behavioral studies (diary entries, A/B testing) to validate further.
